The story
Angelique Devereau, a French refugee in Spain, is made to pose as a retiring child so that her widowed mother can marry the wealthy Spaniard who took them in. Angelique owes her mother loyalty, but she is ready to claim her identity as a woman and find a love of her own.
Diego Aragon comes home from a long voyage and finds Angelique in the family garden by moonlight. She vanishes at dawn, and he enlists the sweet child he takes her to be in the search for the beauty he saw. When he learns who she really is, he swears to make her pay for playing him for a fool. Pirates and the jungles of the Yucatan stand between them and the love glimpsed in that garden.
