The story
King George II has ordered the Acadians, descended from seventeenth-century French colonists, off their Nova Scotia land. Arielle Douville, an Acadian healer, agrees against her instincts to translate for Byron Barclay, captain of the Virginia Militia. She has always despised the English, but his promise to keep the families together in the American colonies unsettles her.
On the ship bound south the Acadians seize Byron and take command. Arielle has to choose between her people and the new life ahead of them, and only by choosing can she find out whether what has grown between her and Byron is love.
