The story
Hunter, a Seneca brave and a well-known scout for the Virginia Militia, has gone back to his people after a white woman's betrayal, swearing never to return. Alanna Barclay, who lost her own family in a raid, is left with a choice when her cousin dies giving birth to a half-Seneca baby: abandon the child or persuade his father to claim him.
Hunter wants nothing to do with an infant that reminds him of his white mother's betrayal, but Alanna's compassion and nerve get under his guard and force him toward a love he would rather refuse.
