The story
Liberty Hunter, half Seneca and red-headed, is accused of a brutal murder that Williamsburg, Virginia is quite ready to believe she committed. The lawyer Stephan MacLeod does not believe it, and, taken with her, offers marriage as the way to keep her out of jail while he proves her innocent.
Liberty finds him overbearing and insists the marriage stay in name only, but with a judge talking about hanging her and the real killer trying to finish her off, his house may be the only safe place. As feeling grows between them, he has to learn to trust her to make her own choices, and neither will speak of love until the murderer is found.
