The story
Catherine Brooks, a young widow and former high school English teacher, volunteers at Lost Angel, a Hollywood center for homeless and runaway teenagers, hoping the experience will ease her return to the classroom. The director, psychologist Luke Starns, gave up a university post to build the place after losing his daughter to suicide and his marriage soon after. He thinks she is too soft for the work; she doubts he has the heart for it.
The book opens with a pimp who preyed on runaways shot dead by a woman in a red dress who walks off in platform heels. Luke calls it good riddance. When two more pimps die, the police start to suspect the killer is one of the Lost Angel teenagers, and while Luke denies it, Catherine cannot stop wondering. The two of them need each other to mend, but with the danger closing in, the first task is to stay alive.
