The story
Sarah Godwin Hadley, the very pregnant widow of a British officer, sails for England so that her child can be born there, as his father was. When her ship is captured by American privateer Captain Christopher MacLeod, the two agree on nothing except the strength of the attraction between them.
Christopher is one of the most successful privateers harrying England's commerce during the Revolutionary War, and he learns too late that Sarah makes the worst of prisoners. It takes a hurricane, during which he stays with her to deliver her son, for her to see the man he is. They become lovers on Martinique, but when Chris is wounded in one of the war's last battles he rejects the devotion he worked so hard to win, and it falls to Sarah to tame his restless heart.
